Goodwin's characteristics typologies

  1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics.
(e.g. stage performance in metal videos, dance routine for boy/girl band, aspiration in Hip Hop).
  2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals. The lyrics are represented with images.
    (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
  3. There is a relationship between music and visuals. The tone and atmosphere of the visual reflects that of the music.
    (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
  4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).
  5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, mirrors, stages, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
  6. There are often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc).

All of these images display genre characteristics of a gangster rap music video, with the expensive cars and bling and girls spread across the bonnets and the male rappers, also the rappers are drowned in bling and expensive clothing.
In a way there is a relationship between lyrics and visuals, as the song is about the rapper making his way back into the rap scene, he is coming in in cars and a big attitude also lines like "still not lovin police" link well as they are committing illegal acts.
The relationship between the music and the visuals is very strong. The music is quite laid back and slow and so is the relaxed attitude of the gangsters rolling through the streets. Also shows the confident attitude of the rappers as they are easy with driving around slowly , almost searching out the area.

Close up of the artists occur alot through this video. In the car with the "babes" and aggressively rapping to the camera, you can see this rappers motif with his rapping hand gestures.

We are invited into the life of the rappers but always made to seem smaller, these are mighty and strong famous rappers and even though we are in a club with them or driving with them we still feel quite nervous and

All of the intertextual references are simply from the generic image of a gangster rapper, how they are seen in films and other music videos is directly portrayed through this music video
